According to Dries Buytaert, the original creator of Drupal, Drupal community has a policy that limits the community form extending support to older versions. Only the current version and its immediate predecessor would receive support from the community. With the community working on a full swing to release Drupal 8, the support to Drupal 6 will be halted. However considering the current scenario, where more than 200K Drupal sites in use, the community might slightly be flexible in its policy. However, the decision is not to support Drupal 6, but to help Drupal 6 users to migrate to Drupal 8.

Drupal 6 to 7 Migration

It seems that Drupal 6 core and modules will not be supported three months after the release of Drupal 8. In order to safeguard the interests of over 200K Drupal 6 users, Dries Buytaert says they have three options to consider. The first option is upgrading to Drupal 7 at the earliest. The second one is upgrading to Drupal 8, within three months of its release. And the third one is finding a Drupal developer that is capable of extending the support after the community halts its support for Drupal6. In his personal blog, he also points out that there already exists a Drupal 6 to Drupal 8 migration path in core, which can be used for testing. He is also confident that if the Drupal Security Team would cooperate with organizations that continue to extend support to Drupal 6 if the issues also affect version 7 and 8 of Drupal.

However, expert Drupal developers consider that serious businesses should not be in a haste to jump into the bandwagon of Drupal 8. Well, if the Drupal community halts its support to version 6, again businesses using Drupal 6 would be in trouble. The best thing for Drupal 6 users to enjoy a honky-dory business until Drupal 8 stabilizes is migrating to Drupal 7. As Drupal 7 would continue to enjoy support from the community even after the release of Drupal 8, it would be apt to migrate to Drupal 7 as of now.
